چکیده

Quorum – sensing (QS) is a cell-to-cell communication in bacteria, which leads to gene expression within a bacterial community. Using QS, bacteria regulate those genes involved in invasion and spread of the pathogens. It can occur in a group of a same bacterial species as well as, between different species. The possible role of understanding of QS and its inhibition in the treatment of infective disorders is promising. The present day therapy against infectious disease is mostly dependent on antibiotic treatment. Antibiotic therapy elicits strong selective pressure on bacteria and thereby, development of drug resistance mechanism in them. Blocking cell-to-cell communication by QS may act as an important tool to disturb their group action. QS depend on secretion of small signaling molecules by bacteria. Development of Quorum-Based Anti-Virulence Therapeutics Targeting Gram-Negative Bacterial Pathogens

Quorum sensing is a cell density-dependent signaling phenomenon used by bacteria for coordination of population-wide phenotypes, such as expression of virulence genes, antibiotic resistance and biofilm formation. Lately, disruption of bacterial communication has emerged as an anti-virulence strategy with enormous therapeutic potential given the increasing incidences of drug resistance in pathog...

Low concentrations of local honey modulate ETA expression, and quorum sensing related virulence in drug-resistant Pseudomonas aeruginosa recovered from infected burn wounds

Objective(s): Honey’s ability to kill microorganisms and even eradication of chronic infections with drug-resistant pathogens has been documented by numerous studies. The present study is focused on the action of honey in its sub-inhibitory levels to impact on the pathogens coordinated behaviors rather than killing them. Materials and Methods:</strong...

Interference of bacterial cell-to-cell communication: a new concept of antimicrobial chemotherapy breaks antibiotic resistance

Bacteria use a cell-to-cell communication activity termed "quorum sensing" to coordinate group behaviors in a cell density dependent manner. Quorum sensing influences the expression profile of diverse genes, including antibiotic tolerance and virulence determinants, via specific chemical compounds called "autoinducers". During quorum sensing, Gram-negative bacteria typically use an acylated hom...

Quorum quenching for the management of dental plaque microbes

In the present study, variation among different bacterial strains was observed in the plaques of tobacco chewers (TC) as compared to those from normal persons (non tobacco chewers) (NTC). Bacterial strain J1 (dominant in the plaques of NTC) did not initiate the process of adhesion (biofilm formation) until it appeared to have reached a required population density necessary for the production of...

بررسی ارتباط بین ژن‌های القایی عامل کروم سنسینگ وابسته به پروموتور و مقاومت به متی سیلین در سویه‌های استافیلوکوک اورئوس بالینی

Background and Objective: Quorum sensing (QS) phenomenon, promoters involved in this pathway and the effect of these promoters on the expression of some structural genes, such as agrA and PII, could reveal the proper activity and gene expression of antibiotic resistance in S. aureus. The aim of this study was defining the relationship between promoter-dependent Quorum Sensing induced genes and ...
